Abstract. This paper discusses the way in which a branch of information systems development — database design — takes its context from a sociological and semiological analysis. The two major objectives of this paper are: (a) to discuss strategies for teaching this material to undergraduate students of computing, (b) to identify potential new directions of research in the database area.
